Exciting Dahlia Updates: New Varieties and Our Royalty Program Announcement!

Updated: Feb 16

Hey there, dahlia lovers!

I’m SO excited to kick off a super fun blog post today because I’m about to give you an exclusive sneak peek at our 2025 dahlia lineup!  Now, this isn’t going to be your typical short and sweet post—this one’s going to be long (in the best way possible!). Why? Because we’ve got some absolutely amazing dahlia varieties to talk about, that we snagged during our shopping season, including a few really awesome UNICORNS we managed to snag! Now, if you are not (yet) dahlia obsessed, portions of this blog may not be very interesting. BUT I encourage you to hang in there because I’m also going to spill the beans on an exciting new program we’re launching this year that I think you’re going to LOVE. More on that toward the end!

Before we dive into all the tuber goodness, though, I want to send a HUGE thank you to each and every one of you who supported our recent tuber sale. Seriously, you all made it such a blast, and we can’t thank you enough! If you didn’t get the chance to shop yet, no worries—there are still some amazing varieties available! Check them out here!

Alright, let’s get to the good stuff—the moment you’ve all been waiting for: our 2025 dahlia lineup!  This lineup is a mix of the dahlias we fell in love with last season and just had to bring back, plus all the jaw-dropping new varieties we’ve managed to grab from the wild shopping world of the dahlia wars! Oh, and before we dive into it, I’ll give you a quick dahlia vocab lesson to make sure you’re fluent in “dahlia speak” (so you don’t have to hit up Google Translate mid-blog).

Unicorn = A dahlia that’s in high demand but crazy hard to get your hands on.

Dahlia Wars = The fast-paced, adrenaline-fueled battle to snag these elusive “unicorn” dahlias that often sell out before you can blink.

Now that you’re caught up, let’s return to the exciting part—our lineup! Last season, we planted a total of 304 dahlia plants across nearly 100 different varieties. But this year? Oh, we’re going big. We’re targeting an impressive 900 to 1,000 plants and (so far) 166 varieties. This does NOT include the 2nd year seedlings or new seedlings we will be planting. However, I say “so far” because… well, I’m a dahlia enthusiast, and I just can’t resist a good sale. There are still a few more shopping opportunities coming up, so I might sneak a few more beauties into the mix if they just happen to fall into my lap. 🤫

And now, without further ado, here’s the lineup you’ve been waiting for…!

I mean… come on! That list has me pumped! We are absolutely buzzing to grow these incredible varieties! Some of these beauties we’re thrilled to see again, but most—well, we can’t wait to meet them for the very first time! Throughout the growing season, we’ll be taking detailed notes on each variety—how productive it is, how well it produces tubers, how true to color it stays in our climate, all the good stuff. We’ll be sure to share all the juicy details with you when it’s time to offer these beauties up to your gardens and farms!

And speaking of exciting new things… drumroll… we’ve got a big announcement!

There’s been a ton of buzz in the dahlia world lately—especially around hybridizing. If you were around for the whirlwind of 2024, you know it was a wild ride for some farms, and it really shifted the landscape of the dahlia scene. But, if you ask me? I think it’s a change for the better! As long as it’s done right. And that’s exactly why we’re launching our brand-new Bloom Royalty Program

We know that the stunning diversity of dahlias doesn’t just happen—it’s the result of years of dedication and careful breeding by talented hybridizers. To support their incredible work, we’ve created the Bloom Royalty Program, which ensures that hybridizers receive fair compensation every time their unique dahlia varieties are sold through our farm.

What is the Bloom Royalty Program? It’s simple: when you purchase a dahlia tuber or cutting from Onken Farm, a portion of the sale goes directly to the hybridizer who developed that variety. This helps fund their continued efforts to create even more beautiful and innovative dahlias. It’s our way of supporting the hybridizers who bring us new colors, forms, and improvements in resilience, while also ensuring the future of dahlia cultivation.

How It Works:

  • The Hybridization Process: Hybridizers spend years perfecting new varieties, improving traits like color, size, and disease resistance.

  • Royalty Payment: With each sale, we pay a royalty to the hybridizer, giving them the financial support to keep breeding new dahlias.

  • Ongoing Support: The royalty system provides continuous support to hybridizers, helping them reinvest in their breeding programs and bring fresh varieties to market.

Why It Matters:

  • Encouraging Innovation: This program allows hybridizers to focus on creating new varieties while we help propagate more of their already released varieties and support their work through royalty payments.

  • Fair Compensation: Hybridization takes years of work, and the Bloom Royalty Program ensures hybridizers are paid fairly for their expertise.

  • Supporting New Breeders: New and emerging hybridizers also benefit from this system, helping to bring fresh ideas and perspectives to the dahlia world.

The Impact on You: As a buyer, you’re not just adding a beautiful flower to your farm or garden—you’re also supporting the entire dahlia breeding community. Your purchase helps fund future innovation and ensures that hybridizers continue to create dahlias with improved qualities, giving you more vibrant and diverse options for your garden.

Each variety that is a part of this program will be labeled as such and have this Bloom Royalty Program Stamp of verification.

How do you keep up on future tuber/cutting sales announcements and updates about the Bloom Royalty Program?

Hi! I agree that hybridizers should be compensated for their work. I see you didn’t include Santa Cruz Dahlias in your list of partnered hybridizers, but you have KA dahlias on your list. Are you not selling KA tubers?

Ok, good to know! There are a few KAs I would like to have but I can get them elsewhere - and hope KA’s Cinder Rose shows up as an extra in an order with you!
